Grade card wedding invite

Oh Boy designed this invitation which takes the form of a 1950s era grade school primer. Included with the invitation is a report card–style comment card, rating the couple’s performance in areas such as “Bouquet toss (distance and height)” and “Apparel and general hygiene,” as well as librarystyle cards as response cards.

Research - More experimental formats

Sales report for an internal staff conference of MFI.

CD packaging featuring a screen saver using the voice of a football announcer.

Book packaging covering all aspects of Chicks on speed work - music, art and fashion.

Fashion photography book without beginning, end or spine, turning the book into an object in its own right.

Research - Experimental formats

Produced by Fabrica, this book about food really stands out from everything else in a bookshop due to the format and packaging and was also cost effective.

Wedding invitation/story

This invitation was designed to tell the story of how the bride and groom met and to invite the guests to be a part of their story. It also became a piece that people kept and shared with others. In effect, it became more than an invitation, but a story.

W+K 2006 xmas card

Another example Wieden + Kennedy different take on creating their xmas cards. The 2006 festive greeting came in the form of a collection of recipes for turning christmas turkey leftovers into curries. It was enclosed in a deluxe leatherette binder and accompanied by a popadomesque CD of suitably exotic sounds, plus exclusive complimentary W+K after-dinner mints. The purpose for doing this was:

a) they are located a short stagger from London's Brick Lane, which is the centre of the universe of curry, and

b) everyone ends up with leftover turkey after christmas...

Each recipe was presented by a member of W+K and related to their favourite dish from one of their local curry houses.

D&AD Winner - Christmas Pudding Sacks

Wieden + Kennedy's agency Christmas card - bin bags printed to look like Christmas puddings, so that when you filled them and put out your christmas rubbish it would bring a bit of festivity to the street.

Really nice example of giving a typical greeting card a different purpose.

Back to the final

Now the D&AD is over can start thinking bout the fmp again. Haven't heard from magma yet so will be contacting them. In mean time, going to research and hopefully get inspired by finding some other projects that have used experimental formats and stayed away from traditions.

Andy Stevens

After discussing my fmp with Andy Stevens, the main points raised were:

  • Make sure what i produce has a purpose/real
  • Produce the stationary without using irony so it doesn't look like a gimmick that is simply mocking people
  • Produce alot of each item, possibly creating packs of 50, so its not just a one off
  • Look at using different materials, could a birthday card be made out of a hoover bag?
  • Try and give each item more of a purpose so its not just a normal invition and could possible be used for something else
